Can I sing “high” notes even though I’m an alto/bass?

Classical vs modern voice types.

The terms contralto, soprano, mezzo-soprano come from classical music, where composers wrote specifically for certain voice types, and choirs require distinct vocal sections for harmonic balance. However, in modern pop singing, these classifications don’t apply the same way.

Instead of labeling voices, we focus on their unique biomechanical traits – like vocal cord thickness, elasticity, and flexibility. You might sound like a contralto now, but your voice could actually have the potential for a soprano range.

Putting singers into rigid categories can be limiting and unnecessary. With the right technique, you may discover that songs you thought were “out of your range” are actually within reach. Often, struggling with high notes isn’t about your voice type – it’s about technique.

Think of it like driving a Ferrari. The car can reach 300 km/h, but if you don’t know how to shift gears, you’ll be stuck in first. Your voice might be just as powerful – you just need the right training to unlock its full potential!
